Introducing Pete Wittstock: Engineering the Interface Between Human Structures and Earth

VAST Resource Solutions welcomes Pete Wittstock, Senior Geotechnical Engineer, to our team. With a Bachelor of Applied Science in Geological Engineering from UBC and extensive experience as a P. Eng., Pete brings a wealth of expertise and passion to our organization.

Pete’s expertise lies in Geohazard Assessments, Geotechnical Investigations, Rock Mechanics, and Project Management. Based in Nelson, B.C., he joined VAST in April 2024. The positive company culture resonated with him, and he was drawn to the prospect of collaborating with a team of diverse colleagues while delving into meaningful work in varying landscapes.

“Rock mechanics, mountain construction, geohazard assessments, and exploring remote areas are my passions,” Pete explained. “I have rope access training – I completed the Society of Professional Rope Access Technicians (SPRAT) Level 1 course in 2017 – enabling me to explore otherwise inaccessible areas. Recently, I collaborated on a project in Rogers Pass, utilizing helicopters to install avalanche towers for remote avalanche control, which I really enjoyed. I’m enthusiastic about contributing to VAST, particularly in mountain construction, where I can blend engineering with adventure.”

A defining memory in Pete’s professional journey was a statement coined by his friend Julian McGreevy during their university days: “A geotech engineers the interface between human structures and the earth”. This succinctly underscores the vital role geotechnical engineers play in shaping safe and sustainable infrastructure.

Beyond his professional endeavors, Pete enjoys spending time with his family, embracing outdoor activities like canoe trips, cycling, and camping. Pete has found a home in the welcoming community of Nelson and the natural beauty of the Kootenays.

Looking ahead, Pete wants to ensure VAST is the go-to geotechnical engineering partner for clients embarking on all phases of project planning and development, and stresses the importance of early consultation. By involving geotechnical expertise from the outset of a project, Pete believes that potential hazards can be identified and mitigated effectively, ultimately saving time, money, and ensuring regulatory compliance.

In Pete Wittstock, VAST Resource Solutions has gained not only a skilled engineer but also a dedicated advocate for safety, sustainability, and the harmonious coexistence of human structures and the natural environment. Welcome to the team, Pete!
