The Opportunity

To support VAST’s strategic goals and growth, we are on the lookout for talented individuals that will embrace our close-knit culture and positive, team-oriented working environment.

We are looking for a Junior Survey Technician to support our expanding geomatics team. The position will provide immense learning opportunities to the candidate, who will be supporting our surveying team with a wide range of field tasks to support engineering and forestry projects. The candidate will support our clients throughout the Kootenay region, contribute to the department’s growth and gain experience in a wide range of sectors and scales of projects. This is a permanent, full‐time position, based in Cranbrook, BC.

Your Responsibilities

  • Support the Geomatics team as we provide survey support to VAST’s Engineering and Forestry teams;

  • Collect survey information to complete road design, bridge designs, and retaining wall designs;

  • Complete work tasks with either a total station, RTK, drone, and/or laser scanning equipment that utilizes Trimble Business Center software;

  • Liaising with clients, supervisors, and VAST’s internal drafting team;

  • Civil and natural resource construction survey layouts;

  • Prepare accurate notes, sketches and field data;

  • Ensure quality assurance of data and deliverables; and,

  • Project coordination and communication with clients and internal team members;

Frequent travel and outdoor work at project sites will be required. Outdoor tasks are performed in remote, natural settings with varying weather conditions.

Our Ideal Candidate

  • Will have a diploma or degree in a surveying-related field (ex: Survey Technician, Engineering Technologist, etc.) from a recognized academic institution;

  • Will be able to register as an AScT, CTech, or another technical accreditation;

  • Brings coursework knowledge of Civil 3D and AutoCAD;

  • Demonstrates an ability to proficiently complete identified job responsibilities;

  • Will have strong interpersonal, organizational and time management skills;

  • Exhibits a professional and positive attitude;

  • Possesses strong written and verbal communication skills; and,

  • Will possess a current Driver’s License.

A candidate that brings previous field, surveying or geomatics experience from a co-op or ‘summer’ position will be beneficial, but is not required.
