Intermediate Biologist

Implementing and assisting in field environmental programs, encompassing general wildlife surveys, nesting bird sweeps and monitoring, bat surveys and monitoring, herptile capture and relocation;

Conducting field site inspections related to mining and industrial activities;

Collecting, managing, and analyzing data, in addition to report writing on wildlife sensitivities;

Providing technical wildlife support to collaborative project teams;

Supporting additional disciplines within VAST’s environmental team, such as water quality monitoring, fish and aquatic projects, and invasive/rare plant programs;

Working collaboratively within VAST’s environmental team and building strong working relationships to support all aspects of project implementation;

Contributing to a positive workplace atmosphere, building on VAST’s culture of teamwork, fun, professionalism and cooperation within the office and field environments.

A BSc or MSc in biology or an equivalent field;

Relevant experience with wildlife biology is preferred, including experience conducting a broad variety of wildlife scopes in pre-construction and construction settings;

Species at Risk experience is an asset;

Plant identification and invasive weed identification is an asset;

Knowledge of provincial and federal regulations, legislation, authorizations and permits;

Knowledge of scientific study design and implementation for field data collection;

Strong written and verbal communication skills;

Excellent interpersonal, organizational, collaboration and time management skills;

Detail-oriented, emphasizing quality of work;

Willingness to learn and adapt to a diverse work environment, which includes the ability to work in all weather conditions and learn how to operate all-terrain equipment;

Superior problem-solving skills, with the ability to think outside the box;

A commitment to health, safety, and wellness;

Valid Driver’s License.

Competitive wages: the expected annual wage range for this position is $65,000 to $90,000, depending on education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities.
