Join us in welcoming Rae Schulz, our summer student, to the VAST Resource Solutions team! Rae has spent the last two years studying at the College of the Rockies in Cranbrook and will be attending the University of Lethbridge this fall to continue her journey towards a Bachelor of Science degree, majoring in Environmental Science. With a passion for wildlife ecology, Rae is working towards her career ambition of becoming a Registered Professional Biologist (RPBio).

This summer, Rae is serving as a Junior Resource Technician in our wildlife department. She has been actively supporting our team on projects involving herptile salvages, wildlife sweeps, and badger surveys.

“Most of my free time is spent in nature, so it’s neat to be paid to do things I already am doing in my spare time, like bird watching and messing around in the water–in a very scientific way, of course!” said Rae. “But mostly I am attracted to this field because I’m very passionate about being a voice for individuals who can’t speak for themselves, and I want to do what I can to protect them and their home to ensure we can all survive this changing world. It’s a little hippy dippy, but it’s true!”

Originally from a small village in Southern Manitoba, Rae has felt at home in the East Kootenay, appreciating its outdoor accessibility, smaller population size, and welcoming community. She says this summer she has found great value in learning from her experienced coworkers, whose mentorship has accelerated her education.

“During my time with VAST, I want to learn more about environmental regulations, and what practices and legislation are put in place to protect wildlife and how its implemented. I’m also interested in the local ecology and how inhabitants are affected by natural and man-made environmental pressures. I’ve really enjoyed learning from my coworkers who have lots of field experience and come from a variety of backgrounds.”

Outside of work, Rae enjoys quintessential Kootenay activities such as climbing, skiing, mountain biking, and hiking. She’s also an avid reader and plant enthusiast, although she notes her green thumb is still a work in progress.

We’re excited to have Rae on board and look forward to seeing the positive impact she will continue to make during her time with us. Welcome, Rae!
