The Opportunity

To support VAST’s strategic goals and growth, we are on the lookout for talented individuals that will embrace our close-knit culture and positive, team-oriented working environment.

We are looking for a Senior Geotechnical Engineer to lead challenging projects and provide technical oversight for our expanding engineering team. This candidate will support our clients throughout the Kootenay region, support the department’s growth and gain experience in a wide range of sectors and scales of projects.

This position is based in Cranbrook, but we welcome applicants from the surrounding communities and the Nelson area.

Your Responsibilities

  • Geotechnical assessments for residential and commercial building foundations, retaining wall design, soil and rock anchor design, etc.
  • Terrain and slope stability assessments.
  • Municipal pavement design.
  • Supervise subsurface geotechnical drilling and test pit excavations and logging.
  • Natural geohazard and steep slope assessments required for building permit applications.
  • River hydrology and hydraulics.
  • Mine planning/engineering including design of pits/quarries, sediment ponds, and ore/soil stockpiles.
  • Hydrogeology.
  • Project management and monitoring.
  • Peer mentoring.
  • Provide professional engineer consulting services to industry, government, agency and NGO clients for a diverse array of engineering and environmental projects.
  • Conceptual bridge design for forestry, municipal, and highway structures.
  • Prepare technical documents including, but not limited to, feasibility studies, concept design, detailed design, and design criteria reports.
  • Provide technical QA/QC review of designs, reports, proposals and communications prepared by staff and/or subcontractors.
  • Contribute to EOI, RFP, RFQ and Tender responses and scope of work proposals.
  • Collaborate with other project leaders on all aspects of project management, including budget development and monitoring, time and cost tracking, client and regulatory communication, reporting, and invoice preparation.

  • Marketing and business development.

Experience working in a fast-paced, dynamic consulting environment that requires flexibility, adaptive management and teamwork is a definite asset.

Our Ideal Candidate

  • Will have a BSc or MSc in Geotechnical or Civil Engineering from a recognized academic institution
  • Will have ten (10) or more years of practical field and design experience; previous consulting experience would be an asset.
  • Will be registered, or eligible for immediate registration, as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with Engineers and Geoscientists of BC (EGBC).
  • Is knowledgeable with government legislation and policies relating to geotechnical engineering.
  • Has prior experience liaising with regulators, First Nations, and other key stakeholders.
  • Has leadership and mentorship experience with junior and intermediate technical staff.
  • Exhibits excellent customer service qualities and enjoys liaising with clients and stakeholders.
  • Demonstrates ability to proficiently complete the identified job responsibilities.
  • Crew and team leadership experience is an asset.
  • Will possess a current Driver’s License.
  • Civil 3D, HEC‐RAS, and AutoCAD skills would be beneficial.
  • Possesses strong written and verbal communication skills.
