The Opportunity

VAST is seeking an experienced Intermediate Biologist to provide science-based and project management leadership to a diverse array of wildlife, terrestrial and wetland habitat, and vegetation assessment programs and studies.

Your Responsibilities

  • Implementing and assisting in field environmental programs, encompassing general wildlife surveys, nesting bird sweeps and monitoring, bat surveys and monitoring, herptile capture and relocation;

  • Conducting field site inspections related to mining and industrial activities;

  • Collecting, managing, and analyzing data, in addition to report writing on wildlife sensitivities;

  • Providing technical wildlife support to collaborative project teams;

  • Supporting additional disciplines within VAST’s environmental team, such as water quality monitoring, fish and aquatic projects, and invasive/rare plant programs;

  • Working collaboratively within VAST’s environmental team and building strong working relationships to support all aspects of project implementation;

  • Contributing to a positive workplace atmosphere, building on VAST’s culture of teamwork, fun, professionalism and cooperation within the office and field environments.

Experience working in a fast-paced, dynamic consulting environment that requires flexibility, adaptive management and teamwork is a definite asset.

Our Ideal Candidate

  • A BSc or MSc in biology or an equivalent field;

  • Relevant experience with wildlife biology is preferred, including experience conducting a broad variety of wildlife scopes in pre-construction and construction settings;

  • Species at Risk experience is an asset;

  • Plant identification and invasive weed identification is an asset;

  • Knowledge of provincial and federal regulations, legislation, authorizations and permits;

  • Knowledge of scientific study design and implementation for field data collection;

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills;

  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, collaboration and time management skills;

  • Detail-oriented, emphasizing quality of work;

  • Willingness to learn and adapt to a diverse work environment, which includes the ability to work in all weather conditions and learn how to operate all-terrain equipment;

  • Superior problem-solving skills, with the ability to think outside the box;

  • A commitment to health, safety, and wellness;

  • Valid Driver’s License.
